European Network for Training in the Management of Aggression

ENTMA is a non-profit association which aims to unite and support trainers across Europe and to share evidence based best practice, experience and expertise in order to achieve practice and organisational excellence in the design, delivery and evaluation of training in the management of aggression within health care and related services.

ENTMA evolved from an informal European collaboration between trainers in the management of aggression which existed since 1998 and adopted the name ENTMA in 2004. The collaboration involved professionals across a broad range of health care and related sectors who were engaged in, or associated with training in the management of aggression. The purpose of the collaboration was to provide a forum within which perspectives on the nature, function and methodologies of training could be exchanged. This exchange facilitated exploration of the core values underpinning training efforts, and established a shared understanding of good practice in the design, delivery and evaluation of training.

This collaboration centred around an annual networking conference which was hosted in Amsterdam, during which trainers and others associated with the management of aggression, had the opportunity to update and share good practice. In addition, invited experts presented keynote and plenary presentations on related research, discussed developments and facilitated debate on challenges related to aggression management and training. These conferences provided the opportunity for trainers to benefit from international perspectives and apply this learning as appropriate to the continuous improvement of their practice.

The international perspectives shared at conferences generated debate, provided powerful insights, and contributed to the development of a unity of vision, approaches and basic assumptions from a European wide perspective. Conference evaluations consistently indicated that delegates experienced these meetings as beneficial and supportive.

In November 2007 it was proposed that ENTMA should evolve from its status as an informal collaboration into a structured European network. A steering committee, consisting of representatives from six European countries, was subsequently formed to explore the role, purpose and function of the network and to develop its vision, mission statement and aims.

'Evidence, Efficacy, Economics and Ethics:
the Challenges Facing Management of Aggression Training in the 21st Century'

Aggression and violence continue to pose significant threats in many workplaces across Europe including health care, social care and education. However, as we near the end of the first decade of the new century training for staff who may be exposed to such behaviours faces significant challenges. In an era of economic stringency and evidence based practice it is increasingly asked to demonstrate that it works in reducing aggression and injuries. It must however also meet concerns regarding the ethical implications arising from training staff, e.g. in physical intervention procedures. This key conference for those involved in designing, delivering and commissioning training across Europe will explore how training can respond to such challenges via state of the art presentations addressing these questions.

"This key event cannot be missed by trainers, policy makers and aggression and violence prevention specialists!!!"
